De Gotham Independent Film Awards, de traditionele aftrap van het awardsseizoen, schrijven dit jaar geschiedenis. Voor het eerst zijn de vijf genomineerden in de categorie Beste Film namelijk geregisseerd door vrouwen. Het gaat om Kelly Reichardts First Cow, die met vier stuks de meeste nominaties in de wacht sleepte, Chloé Zhao's Nomadland, Kitty Greens The Assistant, Eliza Hittmans Never Rarely Sometimes Always en Natalie Erika James' Relic. Daarnaast kreeg Chadwick Boseman postuum een nominatie in de categorie Beste Acteur voor Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. Riz Ahmed maakt kans op diezelfde award voor de Belgische coproductie Sound of Metal.
