Ondanks de beschuldigingen van discriminatie en corruptie tegen de organisatie, de Hollywood Foreign Press Association, zijn op zondag 9 januari de 79e Golden Globes uitgereikt. De ceremonie werd niet uitgezonden op tv en er waren geen journalisten of beroemdheden aanwezig. The Power of the Dog won Beste Film - Drama, Beste Regisseur (Jane Campion) en Beste Acteur in een Bijrol (Kodi Smith-McPhee). In de categorie Beste Film - Musical of Komedie kwam West Side Story als winnaar uit de bus.
