Guillermo del Toro heeft de hoofdvogel - ook wel: de Gouden Leeuw - afgeschoten op het recentste Filmfestival van Venetië voor zijn modern sprookje The Shape of Water. In het sprookje wordt een doofstomme dame verliefd op een waterwezen dat gevangengehouden wordt door de Amerikaanse overheid. "Ik geloof in leven, liefde en cinema," zei een zichtbaar ontroerde del Toro toen hij de prijs in ontvangst nam en op een indrukwekkende staande ovatie getrakteerd werd. The Shape of Water werd de afgelopen dagen ook op de filmfestivals van Telluride en Toronto warm onthaald. De Grote Prijs van de Jury ging naar de Israëlische regisseur Samuel Maoz voor Foxtrot, zijn eerste film sinds het gelauwerde Lebanon. De Franse cineast Xavier Legrand werd bekroond met de Prijs voor de Beste Regisseur voor Custody, een beenhard echtscheidingsdrama.
